Chapter Seven

Karl

Karl didn’t quite know what to make of Cory.

He seemed young, though he said that he was only a year younger than Karl’s twenty three years. Young and a little bit terrified, which Karl wasn’t sure how to deal with.

The fact was, Karl had been hardened by running. Cory hadn’t had that experience. There was more to it than that, though. Either Cory had a very nervous temperament naturally or he had a guilty conscience about something.

Nor did he seem to want to talk much. Karl asked him about where he came from, and he only answered that he was from Boston. That was all Karl could get, and he could even understand that. It wasn’t like he wanted to speak a lot about where he came from, either.

The whole thing left Karl feeling uneasy, though, and he found himself pressing a hand to the slight round of his stomach as though to protect what was growing inside. When he looked at Cory, he saw that the other Omega was looking at his stomach with a mixture of envy and something else that he couldn’t quite put his finger on.

On top of that, the other young Omega was surprisingly funny and very sweet, and he got more so the more time he spent with Karl, like he was loosening up. He never quite lost his reserve, though, and it almost seemed like Cory was trying to hide something.

Just then, right when Karl was wondering if he should confront Cory about that strange look that was so often in his eyes, Vincent walked up. Which was probably a good thing, actually, when Karl thought about it. While he sometimes got the feeling that the other members of the pack knew that he was pregnant, he and Vincent had decided not to make it official until they were safely away from here.

There was something unsettling about the look on Vincent’s face, though. Karl had never had that anger turned on him, but the way that Vincent was looking at Cory made Karl afraid, and he hadn’t done anything wrong.

What could Cory have done to inspire that look? Vincent’s dark eyes flashed as he came over, and very deliberately, he draped an arm around Cory’s shoulders and tugged him close.

“You’re coming with me and we’re going to have a talk,” Vincent growled, and Cory let out a soft whimper of fear.

Karl stared at his mate in shock.

“What are you doing?” he asked. He might be an Omega but that didn’t mean he was going to just sit and watch some poor kid being abused right in front of him. It was odd, because he’d never known Vincent to be cruel before.

“Cory and I have things that we need to sort out, that’s all,” Vincent said, and Karl shook his head. That wasn’t a good enough answer.

“Then I’m coming with you,” Karl said, which earned him a look of gratitude from the other Omega, who looked just as terrified as Karl would expect.

“I think that’s a good idea,” Vincent said, somewhat to Karl’s surprise.
